چکیده

The local dimming backlight technique enables liquid crystal display to present images with high contrast ratio and low power consumption. Considering that it is more important to make sure a high quality of the displayed image when reducing the power consumption, therefore, in this paper the new algorithm chooses RPSNR (the peak signal-to-noise ratio) =30 as the lowest standard to guarantee the quality of image. RPSNR =30 could provide a value that the maximum distortion of the image can be accepted, then, we substitute the maximum gray level of each region into the formula to judge whether satisfy the flow chart. If the value do not meet the condition, we decrease it one by one until find the right value. Finally, we take the luminance of the right value as backlight luminance. Meanwhile, a method is also proposed in this paper to simplify the calculation time. Successive searches will be made on the basis of the n (ranging from 0.1 to 1) times of the maximum luminance, and stop when RPSNR>=30. However, in order to guarantee the quality of the image, the 0.7 times of the maximum luminance is used as the minimum backlight luminance. In the end, we only choose 0.7, 0.8 and 0.9 times of the maximum luminance as backlight luminance.

Method of controlling external electrode fluorescent lamps for local dimming of liquid crystal displays

This paper proposes a method of controlling external electrode lamps (EEFLs) for local dimming of liquid crystal displays (LCDs). In the proposed method, each EEFL is divided into four partitions using external electrodes formed on the outer surface of the lamp. The luminance is controlled by varying the duration of ac power applied to the center electrode of each partition. The shape of the ex...

Pixel-by-pixel local dimming for high-dynamic-range liquid crystal displays.

We propose a high dynamic range (HDR) liquid crystal display (LCD) with pixel-level local dimming. The device structure consists of a pixelated LCD dimming panel to control the backlight intensity entering the master LCD panel. According to our analysis and test cell experiment, this dual-panel display system possesses exceedingly high contrast ratio (> 1,000,000:1) and high bit-depth (> 14 bit...

Intelligent and Green Energy LED Backlighting Techniques of Stereo Liquid Crystal Displays

As modem society has been reshaped rapidly into the multimedia information society, large size of display devices is required. Thin-film-transistor liquidcrystal-displays (TFT-LCDs) are one of the most popular display devices from small to large size. TFT-LCDs need backlight source, because they are not a self luminance device. Backlight for LCDs is becoming more important with growth of the LC...

Reduction of Image Degradation due to Viewing Angle in Adaptive Dimming Technique

An adaptive dimming technique controls both LCD panel transmittance and its backlight luminance adequately and locally according to the input TV signal. The technique reduces the power consumption and also improves the picture quality. However, a steep change in backlight luminance distribution due to the application of the technique causes image degradation around the boundary of the segments ...
